A corticotomy is a surgical operation involving making a cut in the crestal part of a bone in order to separate or split it for the purpose of widening it. Its purpose is to separate both cortices and make the most of the elasticity of the spongy part, to obtain sufficient bone substrate for fitting our implants. The cortices are separated and the required gain in width is obtained by making a crestal cut with or without discharges, and with the help of expanders or osteotomes.
This operation is performed with a latest generation electric scalpel, which cuts selectively and does not damage any major structures, providing complete safety during the operation. This technique is particularly indicated in the upper jaw as it has more bone marrow and thus greater elasticity, when there is a ridge of more than 3/4 mm and we want to fix the implants without it being necessary to first wait for the bone to regenerate, which would be necessary without that expansion.
